I read today's Times Herald-Record's article on "Dealing with concussions" and found it ironic that leading authorities agreed that coaches, kids and parents should be made more aware of the warning signs of a concussion but sport officials were not mentioned.
Don't we check that the athletes are properly equipped. That visor are clear, casts are covered, mouthpieces are legal and used etc.?
I also read that there is a Section 9 concussion management team that hopes to create a Section 9 policy on concussions. Are there any sports officials on this team?
It might be a good idea for CHVFOA to invite Janet Carey, committee chairperson or trainers Craig Olejniczak or Bob Coudrey to one of our General meetings to discuss what signs of a concussion we as officials can look for.
After all, there just might be a coach out there who's main priority is winning and not the health of there players.
I personally would hate to know that with a little more knowledge I could have prevented a permanent injury to an athlete.
What do you think?
Bernie

There was a brief presentation by this group at the Section IX coaches Interpretation meeting that was held last August. The presentation was brief and mainly consisted of handouts for the coaches and trainers to use in gauging potential concussions and other head injuries.
